    Riding Mountain National Park

  • Spruce Woods

Point your canoe or kayak towards Spruce Woods Provincial Park, 200 km west of Winnipeg, to combine an exhilarating day of paddling with a short hike. From the Stockton Ferry, ride the current of the Assiniboine River downstream about 35 km to Spruce Woods. Twist and wind your way along the snaking river bends past steep sandy cliffs.

Watch for the sign and stairwell to the hiking trail about 3 km before the park. Stretch your legs with a quick jaunt into the blue-green oasis of the Devil`s Punch Bowl. Explore a little further to finds a complete contrast on the Spirit Sands Trail. Bring your water to hike this geographic anomaly, where the sun beats down and open sand dunes create desert-like conditions.

Cool off with a swim in the park’s main campground, Kiche Manitou. Leave the tent at home and kick back in your own yurt, complete with electricity and rustic log furniture. Spend the night there or simply stay put at Spruce Wood’s canoe launch campsite. No need to bring your own boat – rentals are available.
